The HEX watch band is a silicone strap which accommodates the new 6th generation iPod Nano, turning it into a wristwatch. The design allows for easy access to the controls, whilst still looking like a watch from the future! Bear in mind that the iPod nano features a host of touchscreen features, and this seems like a winner!

Nine different colours are offered to either match or contrast with your iPod Nano.

Is it just me, or is the future getting closer than before?!?

In the realms of fantasy, owning a yacht is pretty high up there for a man on my income. But if the lottery win came upon my family, and they were kind enough to send some my way, and it was A WHOLE HEAP OF CASH, I might invest in a WHY (Wally-Hermes Yachts).

I’ve never been one for the sea – I’ve always enjoyed air travel as a preferred method of travel – but there’s something about the look of this thing that makes me hope for rising sea levels and maybe a Government-run scheme asking for volunteers to try living on some thing like this. Is that wrong…?!?

From Swipelife:

WHY (Wally-Hermes Yachts), a collaboration between esteemed Monaco-based yacht maker Wally and the equally esteemed French fashion house, recently unveiled their first production, and it’s a beauty.

While the yacht’s specs are top-notch (as expected), what really sets this belle apart is its luxurious use of space. The interior features an open floorplan with a grand stairwell worthy of a cruise line, with multiple living spaces formed by particular arrangements of Hermes furniture.

Perhaps the most stunning use of space is seen on the stern, arranged like a poolside, with interior cabanas facing the sea. Because of the quality and spaciousness of this vessel, Wally-Hermes’ claims that they were looking to create an island in the sea ring true.

On reflection, I think I’d prompt for the 58 x 38 model. Sure, it’s got a pool in the front with a helipad behind – surely, standard in most luxury yachts, no? – but what really sells it is the beautiful design, timeless interiors, incredible use of wood for a perfect finish and also a real nod to sustainability.

Oh, who am I kidding? You had me at helipad…

Whilst I cannot besmirch the reputation of Ikea and their world of mass produced, low price furniture, I’ve noticed recently that everything is starting to look the same. It’s probably my own fault for memorising their catalogue back to front, so when I walk in a room, the chances are that I will focus in on certain piece of furniture.

MyKea Expedit covered in 'Girl with Headphones'

Within the realm of design, I’ve always loved small details that really differentiate one thing from another. Even if these details are only apparent to the user – like the lining in a Paul Smith suit, or the vibrant colour used inside a bland-looking cupboard that is only visible when the door is opened – to me they lift something higher.

I recently came across the MyKea website, which goes some way to weaving the magic design dust to standard Ikea pieces of furniture by splitting up a vivid design into vinyl sections, which are then applied to doors or back panels.

You can work your way through many designs, either by most sold, best rated etc. or by colour. You can even become an artist and submit your own designs.

So there we have it, a simply solution to turn a standard, mass produced piece of furniture into something different. I love it!

I recently had the priviledge of being given a guided tour around the Roundhouse – which makes up part of Derby College – by the project’s principle architect.

I wanted to be an architect when I was at school, but that dream had to change rapidly because it turns out that I wasn’t THAT great at maths and science. But I still retain an interest in all things design and architectural, so this trip was highly anticipated!

In the words of the architects practice:

Built in 1839 as railway works, the site boasts the world’s oldest roundhouse. After 20 years of dereliction, the site has been rescued by Derby College to become a vocational college campus.

Completed at a cost of £32.5m the scheme was a traditional contract completed on time and within budget.

From a feasibility study commissioned in 2003, the architects have seen the project from inception through to completion. Working with the Grade II* Listed buildings has been a very challenging yet rewarding process.

Two new buildings have been added to the site, the freestanding Stephenson building and the Kirtley building which connects the two ranges of Listed structures.

The beauty of this project was that the building was treated with respect, and a very innovate solution came out in the problem-solving process.

For the students who study here, it must truely be an inspirational work area. Even as I was walking around, I got the feeling that the right environment is key to opening up these young minds, helping them grasp every opportunity that will come their way.

I wish my school was just as influential. Who knows, I may have fulfilled my dream to one day design a project just like this!
